Feast of Blessed Bartholomew of Vicenza

Dear Parents,

Many thanks to all who helped prepare the fantastic family picnic.  The weather was wonderful, as was the company.  Thanks to Bob Quinn for the use of his grill and for grilling, to Deana Muth and Mary Quinn for making the arrangements, and to Mike Sciambra for the donation of the bread.

Facilities Update

I would like to thank Dennis Healey for responding so quickly re: the 11/12 roof and repairing it again, and to thank God for holding off the rain until Dennis was done.  Thank you to Mike Stagner and Don Ferguson for similarly jumping on repairing the leaks in the 5/6 classroom.  Thank you to Koreen Immen for locating a push mower for us.  Thanks also to Chuck Haeuser for his continued care of all things lawn related.  Finally, a big thank you to George and Mimi Bennetts for their ongoing work to beautify the campus, including painting the sheds (now called barns) and the PreK/K play area.  I think you’ll agree the campus looks great and that it’s good to have non-leaking classrooms, and we really could not do this without the support of such great volunteers.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Report Cards

I just wanted to say a word about the upcoming Parent-Teacher conferences and the report cards you will receive at that time.  Hopefully, with the increased reporting over the course of the quarter, there will be fewer surprises than in the past.  We are genuinely devoted to improving the quality of the education your students receive, and regular communication about their progress is a big part of that.

Please make every effort to attend your assigned conferences.  These conferences are the perfect venue for discussing your children with the teachers—it’s a set time, the teacher should be prepared, there are no little (or big) ears listening in, etc.  Sidewalk chats and quick e-mails are no substitute for a well-prepared, face-to-face discussion.  Please know that you can always set up personal meetings with the teachers throughout the school year, too.

Also, please keep in mind that there are normal adjustments that students go through.  The transition to a new grade can present new challenges.  The transition to a new classroom combines the new grade aspect with new teacher(s), sometimes a more significant jump in the level of the material, new rules, etc.  In particular, the jump from 6th to 7th Grade and from 8th Grade to High School can be especially challenging for students.  Don’t despair about one difficult quarter, and don’t let your student despair, either.  Let’s all work together—parents, students, teachers, and administration—to ensure the best possible learning experience for your children.

I also want to remind you about the Academic and Personal Deportment section of the report card.  This section is there to provide a clear indication that we are not just interested in grades, but in forming our students mind, body and soul so as to do all things, as our motto says, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam—for the Greater Glory of God.  These categories also help you as a parent to know where you can best aid in your child’s academic and personal development.  The scale of Excellent—Satisfactory—Needs Improvement—Unacceptable was devised to hone in on each student’s progress in these areas.  Only a mark of Unacceptable will keep a student off of the honor roll.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Yours in Christ,

Brian

Weekly Words from Miss Jaminet

October 27, 2009

Success Story At our most recent staff meeting the teachers expressed that they are pleased with the atmosphere on the campus this year.  Overall, our students are happy, courteous, respectful, helpful, and making good choices – both academically and behaviorally.  Congratulations to our teachers for setting a fine example and to our students for answering our challenge to live out our mission statement – in particular, our yearly goal to manifest a   “faith-filled environment in order to renew the world through children and young adults who possess the highest educational, moral, civic, and spiritual values.”

It’s that time of year – Halloween. This year Halloween falls on a Saturday and not on a school day.  We will not be having a school-wide celebration of Halloween.  Individual teachers may choose to have a contained party within their classrooms/periods (which may involve changing into simple costumes and then out of them again).  Otherwise, on Friday, October 30, students are expected to be in uniform.

November in the Catholic Church is traditionally a month to pray for the souls of our dearly departed.  Our 9th-10th class will be leading the school community in praying for the deceased.   Mr. John Bertolini and the 9th & 10th grade students will be visiting each classroom during the week to discuss and to distribute the All Souls Day Flyer.  They will be coming home on Thursday, 29th and should be brought back to school on Friday, 30 th.  You are most welcome to send along the names of departed loved ones to include in our prayers. Please write down the names on the flyer and send them to the 9th-10th room or to the office. You may also access the form from our website by clicking here.

Friday, October 30th is Election Day for Student Government.   The entire student body will participate in an election for class representatives to the Student Government on Friday morning. At noon we will introduce our new representatives and listen to short presentations by our new student body President and Vice President. Mrs. Thornton and Miss Jaminet will be serving as faculty advisors for the student government.  We are still looking for a parent volunteer interested in helping as a Parent Advisor.

Peace & Joy,

Miss Jaminet

Reminders from the Office:

Parent Teacher Conferences:

The Parent Teacher Conference schedule was mailed out two weeks ago;  however you can also access the schedule on our web site by clicking here.  This is the only scheduled conference of the year so please make every effort to keep your appointments.  To make the process of each conference go smoothly and remain on time it helps to have your questions ready for each teacher. (Bringing notes is a good idea.)  If you are unable to make your conference please contact your students teacher(s) for your student(s) in order to reschedule.

Dale Ahlquist presents: The Case for Saint G.K. Chesterton:

Please come to hear the President of the American Chesterton Society, Dale Ahlquist speak on the most widely quoted man in modern times, G.K. Chesterton.

Chesterton was both a profound and prolific defender of Christianity and the Church and he wrote over 100 books on subjects ranging from philosophy to fiction, poetry, theology, literature and history.  Please don’t miss this opportunity to gain a new perspective on the issues of Chesterton’s time and ours.

Dale Alhquist is the author of Common Sense 101 and G.K. Chesterton: The Apostle of Common Sense and is considered to be one of the most respected Chesterton scholars in the world.   Mr. Ahlquist will speak in the chapel at 7:30 pm on Sunday, November 15.  There will be no charge for this event but donations are always welcome. For more information please see the flyer posted on the school website by clicking here.

Pens for Sale:

With the intention of saving our parents from emergency runs to Staples and Office Depot for fountain pens, we will now be selling the disposable pens for $3.00 in the office.   We have both blue and black ink pens.

Fundraiser for Rome:

Mrs. Jennifer Thornton will be collecting all CRV recycling afterschool, in the school parking lot on Friday, October 30. All the proceeds will go to help fund the Rome Trip.  Mrs. Thornton will be making regular collections for the Rome Trip so please continue to save all your CRV recycling throughout the year.

See’s Candies Fundraiser:

The Parent Guild is looking for volunteers to run the See’s Candies Fundraiser. All proceeds go to fund the activities for which the Parent Guild are responsible, such as Graduation, Prom, Family Picnic, Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and many more.  If you are willing to help please contact Mary Quinn @ 707-259-4800 or Toni Williams @ 707-258-9030.

Boys' Soccer and Girls' Volleyball Update

The Trinity Prep girls' volleyball and boys' soccer teams are winding down their respective seasons, with the volleyball team still very much alive for a postseason berth and the soccer squad attempting to finish strong.   A victory over Auburn Christian last Tuesday, followed by a loss to first place New Life Christian on Thursday has set the stage for a huge home match to decide the Crusaders playoff fate against Freedom Christian on Wednesday, November 4 at Crosswalk Community Church at 4 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for this Tuesday, but Freedom Christian was unable to play because of a school retreat.  Currently 5-2 in Northern Pacific Athletic Conference play.  If the volleyball team defeats Freedom Christian the girls will most likely earn a postseason berth.   In the victory over Auburn Christian Trinity's Clare Quinn and Claudia Gutierrez led the way at the service line, as both put together impressive runs in helping the Crusaders outlast a tough Auburn Christian squad which pushed Trinity to four games before we finally put the match away.

On the soccer pitch, our boys' soccer squad continues to play exciting soccer and has been putting some scares into the elite teams in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athlete League.   Last Tuesday, the Crusaders nearly pulled off the upset of the year in falling 2-1 to first-place and perennial Sac-Joaquin Section power Sacramento Country Day. George Bakh tied the game with a second half goal for the Crusaders and that score held up thanks to some excellent defensive work from Anthony Kersting, Joe Thornton, Dominic Lazzaro, Joe Bisconer and Isaiah Cortright and goalkeeper Alex Nelson who led Trinity's best defensive effort of the year.  Friday, the Crusaders received goals from Sean LaRochelle and George Bakh and led Buckingham Charter 2-1 in the second half before falling late 4-2.   With three games remaining the soccer team hits the road this week, traveling Tuesday to Marysville to play New Life Christian, before heading to Antelope to face Global Youth Charter on Thursday. Both matches are schedule to kickoff at 4 p.m.

Boys' Basketball Meeting Set for November 1

The following is an email that was sent to parents of boys' basketball players by our varsity boys' basketball Coach Jesse West. It details all the aspects of the November 1 meeting.  This meeting is open to all high school boys who are interested in playing basketball this year.

Email from Coach Jesse West

I wanted to take the time to email you about the upcoming boy's basketball season which is just a few weeks away. I only have email addresses for about half of our parents so if you could help me spread the word and collect email addresses for the other parents, I would greatly appreciate it. I have also been emailing the players for the past couple of weeks so they have most of this information.

Our season officially starts November 10th with our first official day of practice. I always like to begin our season with something involving the families so that we can be sure there is an open line of communication between parents, coaches, and players. Also, in our program we continually stress God, family, school, and basketball. I think that opening with a family event helps to drive that home.

So, I'm planning a parent meeting for Sunday, November 1st at 6pm at Kolbe/Trinity. I'm asking everyone to bring something small (chips, drinks, brownies, etc) to share with the group. During this time, I will be meeting with our team to go over what is expected of them during games, practices, and in the classroom as well as decide on our team rules for the year. I also would like to meet with the parents about what to expect as far as time commitment, how we plan to be sure the players are living a balanced life (with the 4 areas mentioned above), and to give you a chance to get to know our coaches and coaches' wives a little better. I expect the entire evening to last until about 7pm.

One thing I wanted to give you advanced notice on is what your son will need for the year. I want you to know the assistant coaches and I have been working hard to develop sponsorships with some of the local businesses and have already secured some things for the team based on the money we've already raised and are still expecting a little more before the season starts. With that said, every player will need:

1. BASKETBALL Shoes (we had a lot of guys coming to summer practices in skater shoes and slip-ons)

2. A Travel bag (gym bag)

3. Proper Clothing for practices

4. A personal water bottle to have with him at all times

Now, I'm proud to tell you that #3 and #4 have already been taken care of. I've also found an amazing deal to help with #1 and #2. I want to make it clear that if your son already has a travel bag and BASKETBALL shoes, I am not asking you to go out and buy new ones. However, if you find that you will need to buy them anyway, I have found this as a way to help.

We've made a deal with a company that will provide team shoes (Nike), a sweat suit (hooded shirt and pants), and a travel bag for just $100!  Again, if 2 people take advantage or 12, this is to help you. I know most basketball shoes are at least $100 by themselves! However, if at least 12 of our guys order this, we will get free printing on the sweats and travel bags to have our team info on it.

I wanted to give you this info so you'd have plenty of time to think about it because we will need to place our order the night of the parent meeting to get everything on time. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me or email. It might also help if we can group reply to what you might bring for the parent meeting so that is organized. And again, if you can help me to get the word to all of the other parents I would really appreciate it.

 Sincerely,

Jesse West
