Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows
Dear Parents,
Harvest Fest
[cue music from Jaws] Just a down-and-dirty update this week. Remember to:
Buy tickets: Tickets for Harvest Fest are available for sale after school every day and we need you to help make this a successful Harvest Fest.
Sell tickets: Encourage friends and family to come. If you have a group, tables are available— $700 for a table for 8 or $900 for a table for 10.
Buy Wine Cellar raffle tickets: For $20 per entry, ticket holders will have a chance at winning around 60 bottles of wine. Tickets should be available for sale after school this week, too.
Show up to help set-up: see below for more information.
We need all who can help set up at Black Stallion Winery at 10:00 am Friday. We will meet in the parking lot, not inside the winery. Check in with Bob Quinn, as he knows what to do. Please be patient with us as this is our first time at this location and is new for all of us. Also, please be respectful to the winery staff—they have been amazing to work with and very kind and generous to the school.
Day of the event: if you are coming as a guest or working please remember we are inside a winery and the Live Auction is in the barrel cellar which is quite cool, so dress for cooler temps or ladies bring a wrap. Tell your friends! With any questions about the Friday set-up or Saturday, please call Marissa Amador at 255-3757 or 483-5292.
A select group of high school students is being asked by Marissa to help work the event. If your student has not been asked to work, please do not bring them to the event, as they will not be permitted to stay. Aside from those particular students, this is an adults-only event.
Remember, there will be no school on Monday, September 21, as a Harvest Fest Recovery Day.
Sod Update
Due to an unexpected, generous donation, we are planning on having sod installed (no need to break our own backs!) this Saturday morning. Good thing Harvest Fest is an evening event…Some of you have gotten phone calls, but if you’re available tomorrow or Thursday to do a little raking of the field, please let me know. Call first, as I have someone out there as I write this, and perhaps it will just be done. If you would still like to make a donation to help defray the cost of the sod, please let me know.
REMINDER: New Pet Policy
Due to a couple of recent near-incidents and a general liability concern, I am implementing a policy of no pets outside of vehicles on campus without approval. My general inclination was to be fairly tolerant on this, and I have been, but these recent events have given me cause for concern. If a pet is coming for show-and-tell or some other purpose, please just seek approval in advance. Thank you for your help with this and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Yours in Christ,
Brian

Weekly Words from Miss Jaminet
September 15, 2009
Let me take a moment to share some success stories with you!
· As you know from Back to School Night, we began the school year by emphasizing our mission statement goal for the year to make Charity a lived virtue at Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep. Specifically, we’re challenging students to be courteous all day long! The students are responding very well. I have many photos of students on the board in the office and just as many who have declined the recognition but were recommended by classmates or teachers for noticeable courtesy.
· The high school boys reported that they enjoyed Fr. Chrysostom’s retreat conferences and Father himself told me that our young men were engaged and respectful, if not also exuberant in their free time. Thanks, gentleman!
· Fr. McNeely offered teaching sessions on the Extraordinary Rite of the Mass in Latin to the lower grades and to the upper grades. We will celebrate our first Latin Mass tomorrow at the 7:52 am Mass time. Please join us in praying this richly symbolic, traditional rite of our liturgy. Fr. McNeely, our celebrant, as a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, has a special devotion and mission to spreading understanding, appreciation, and the practice of the Extraordinary Rite.
· As part of our Faith in Action program, many of the upper grades students have been attending sessions of “Survivor Training” with Ron Maxson. These students are learning how to take a leadership role in local pro-life activities. As part of Faith in Action, we will be offering students the opportunity to participate in the next 40 Days for Life, which will be kicked-off on Tuesday, 9/22 with a presentation by Walter Hoye, a pro-life warrior.
Congratulations to the 15 students earning Summer Reading awards, and especially to the 5 students earning the highest honors! Awards will be presented this Friday after morning Mass.
FLU & COLD SEASON is upon us! Health officials are predicting a severe flu season. Already this week we experienced an increase in students staying home due to sickness, as well as many students being sent home sick. Please help us limit the spread of sickness by keeping your students home when they are contagious. Signs of contagion are fever, moderate to severe runny noses, moist and persistent coughing and sneezing, and vomiting. Thank you for your efforts to keep us healthy!
I’m looking forward to Harvest Fest this Saturday. A HUGE thank you to those parents who have dedicated so much time and energy preparing this fantastic event!
Peace & Joy,
Miss Jaminet
Athletic Department:
Boys' Soccer and Girls' Volleyball Update
Monday was a good day for Trinity Prep athletics. The Boys' Soccer team outlasted the Justin-Siena junior varsity squad 3-2 in a scrimmage. Brendan Quinn netted a pair of goals, while Anthony Kersting posted the other Crusaders score. George Bakh had an assist for Trinity.
The soccer team opens Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League play this Friday against Global Youth Charter. Currently, the match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Napa Valley College, but there is a chance that the game will be moved under the lights for a night contest at Justin-Siena High. We will spread the word about exact game time if a change is made.
The Crusaders continue NPAC play the following Tuesday, September 22 with a home match against Faith Christian at Napa Valley College at 4:00 p.m. The Crusaders host Geyserville in a non-league contest the following day with another 4:00 p.m. kickoff at Napa Valley College.
Meanwhile, the girls' volleyball team put forth its best effort to date, taking Lutheran the distance in their home-opener. Claudia Gutierrez shined for the Crusaders, especially at the service line, where her 13 straight points off of serve in the fourth game keyed a Trinity rally to force a fifth and deciding game.
Shannon Pace, Rachel Nelson, Anna Arend, and Marisa Streett all performed well for the Crusaders, who travel to Valley Christian of Roseville Tuesday, September 15 before coming home for their final non-league match against Napa Christian on Tuesday, September 22 at 4:30 p.m. at Crosswalk Community Church.
Our Northern Pacific Athletic Conference opener has been moved to Wednesday, September 23 at Crosswalk Community Church against North Hills Christian at 4 p.m.
Remember to check the "Sports" page of the school website for updated schedules.
7-8 Grade Girls' Basketball Meeting
We are holding a meeting for any 7-8 grade girls who are interested in potentially playing basketball and for their parents on Monday, September 21 in the Fellowship Hall on campus at 7:00 p.m. We are hoping to gauge interest in forming a 7-8 grade girls team for this year. Trinity Prep Varsity Girls' Basketball Coach John Streett will be in attendance.
Calling all Interested 3-8 Grade Boys' Basketball Players!
Trinity Prep Varsity Boys' Basketball Coach Jesse West is hosting a meeting for all interested boys’ basketball players in grades 3-8 on Monday, October 5 in the Fellowship Hall on campus at 7:00 p.m. Parents and students are invited. This meeting does not have to be limited to Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep students and families. Interested 3-8 grade boys and their parents from outside our school are encouraged to attend.
Service Hours Opportunity! Looking for Basketball Camera Operator
For many years, Allan Cravalho was kind enough, not to mention talented enough, to film many of our basketball games. This afforded our coaches the luxury of studying game film of opponents and our own team and to apply that information going forward. It also served as another way to document some of the wonderful moments of a particular year and Allan was known to put together highlight tapes at the end of the season.
Both our Girls' Basketball Coach John Streett and Boys' Basketball Coach Jesse West have inquired about finding someone with either the equipment and/or time to film games. There would be no expectation to create highlights or do anything extravagant. This would simply serve as a tool for players and coaches.
Any hours worked in this capacity would count toward your total service hours.
See Bob Greene if anyone is interested or has equipment we could use for such an activity.
G.K. Chesterton:
Actor and Professor Chuck Chalberg, creator of such memorable works as The Everlasting Man, Orthodoxy and the Father Brown Stories will be coming to Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep to present his unique insights on author, columnist, poet & apologist G.K. Chesterton. Please join us on Sept. 27 at 7:00 pm at the school. There is no charge for this event but donations are welcome.
Reminders from the office:
Emergency Cards – Please remember to send in your student emergency cards as soon as possible. We need to complete our records for the year and we have more field trips scheduled in the upcoming weeks. All students must have a current emergency card on file to attend any field trip.
Sweetwater Retreat for Girls – The upcoming retreat for our high school girls on Sept. 24 & 25 is fast approaching. We need at least two female volunteers to chaperone the event. Father Gregory of the order of Norbertines from Orange County will be the attending priest for the retreat. Please call the office if you have any questions or would like to chaperone. You may access the permission slip (here).
