August 18, 2009
Feast of St. Joan of the Cross

Dear Parents,

Wow, what a couple of weeks! Take a look at this:

I would like to thank everyone who helped to make this possible:

our generous benefactors who donated the money at last year's Harvest Fest; Kiwanis Club of Napa, for donating the construction labor and $1,500 toward the project; Mike Stagner and Don Ferguson, who spent many, many hours preparing the site, building the border, auguring the holes, etc.; Chuck Haeuser, who arranged for the loan of invaluable equipment, got us a great price on the bark, and has created an irrigation plan; Bob Greene, for keeping the project moving forward while I was off gallivanting around national parks; the Parents' Guild, for donating $2,100 toward the project; Deana Muth and Mary Rowles for taking care of food for the Kiwanis members; Bob Quinn, Bob Greene, Mike and George Bakh, Matt Badley, Jerry Muth, Andrew, Anthony and Peter Kersting, Greg Muth, Daniel, Michael and Chuck Rowles, B.J. Hickey, Chris Thornton, Paul Obranovich, Peter Hayes, Efren and Adrian David, Daniel Perez and anyone I may have missed, who helped with the prep of the site and/or the actual installation of the playground.

By the way, as a fundraiser, we'll be charging $5 for 10 minutes of swing time. Just kidding...

Work Days

Many thanks to all those who came to work at the school on Saturday. Jerry Muth, Mike and Kathy Pace, Anna Hickey and Tony Ryan continued and nearly completed the painting. Mimi Bennetts, Tom Huss and Jesse Perez did a ton of tree and bush trimming; Bill Snowden continued his efforts to eradicate the pernicious blackberry plants; and several teenagers got in the act by clearing brush and generally cleaning up. Again, my apologies if I've missed anyone.

Remember that this Saturday, August 22, we have our final work day before school starts. This is the final cleaning work day-washing, vacuuming, weeding, sweeping, etc.-to make sure the place looks as good as possible. Again, please try to show up. Cleaning supplies and implements are welcome.

Sometime soon, we also need to re-do the irrigation around the playground and for the playing field in preparation for laying sod. If you can help with irrigation, please let me know.

If you feel really guilty, generous, or both about any of this, you can also make a donation, as we will be over budget on these improvements. If you have a sod connection and can get us sod for less than my current best quote of $0.24/ft2, please let me know.

Back to School Night

Remember that Back to School Night is on Friday, August 28 beginning at 7:00. There have been a lot of exciting developments, but we also face many challenges. Remember that this is a mandatory meeting-please come out in force to stay connected with your children's school and help us take the school to the next level.

Your School Needs You!

Remember that the absolute best, most important recruiting method we have is YOU-your word of mouth, your positive statements, your looking out for new recruits. If you can think of anybody who would be a good fit at our school, of anybody who cares as much about their children's education as you do, put in a good word for your school! Keep in mind that we have a Pre-K/Kindergarten class and are now offering full-day as an option. Send all interested parties to Bob Greene, our salesman extraordinaire.

Yours in Christ,
Brian

Announcements

Sports:

Fall Sports Kick, Set off:

The 2009-2010 athletic year for varsity athletics at Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep officially began this week, with the opening practices of the year for girls' volleyball and boys' soccer. Volleyball had an especially exciting start with their very own "Midnight Madness" practice on Monday morning.

We still have room for more players for each sport. Any interested student and their family should see Athletic Director Bob Greene for details about participating in one of our fall sports or any of our other sports during the school year (boys', girls' basketball in the winter, boys' baseball and girls' soccer in the spring).

Remember, all student-athletes must be physically cleared to play and have a completed physical on file with the school in order to participate in practices or games. The school's physical form can be downloaded and printed off the "Sports" page on the official school website at http://www.kolbetrinity.org

Looking for Drivers for Road Games:

As is tradition (an unfortunate, but necessary tradition) we will need parents to drive to away games once again. With the departure of the Cravalho family to Colorado we will be missing one of the all-time great and reliable transporters of our student-athletes. Our hope is that we will not have to lean on the same high school parents over and over for this service.

If all parents of high school student-athletes would drive to at least one game for the season of sport that their student participates this would be a huge help to those who drive nearly all the time.

Look through the game schedule for girls' volleyball or boys' soccer and if there are any games you would be willing and able to drive to let Athletic Director Bob Greene know by calling the office (707) 258-9030.

All volunteer drivers must meet three requirements.

One, fill out the volunteer drivers form. It can be printed out off the 'Sports" page of the school website. Here is a link for your convenience http://www.kolbetrinity.org/Documents/Volunteerdriverform.pdf

Two, provide a copy of proof of insurance that states the you have liability coverage of at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence.

And three, a copy of your driver's license. All of this will be put on file in the main office.

Cars that can transport many people are always nice, but every driver helps regardless of car size. For example, with Head Volleyball Coach Nancy Nelson able to take seven people to each game we would not need someone with a big vehicle to take the remaining girls that would need to make a particular trip.

I understand why this is not something that everyone loves to do, but parental support is necessary for this and many other aspects of the sports program to work. Again, please look at the girls' volleyball and boys' soccer schedules (attached) and see if there are any games you would be able to drive to. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Volleyball, Soccer Practice and Game Schedules

For all parents of student-athletes, along with anyone who cares to know. For the girls' volleyball and boys' soccer practice schedules, please contact the office at 258-9030.

Remember, the most updated game schedules for all varsity sports throughout the year can be found on the "Sports" page of the school website at Girls' Volleyball and Boys' Soccer

PE Uniforms

We will be selling the PE uniform shirts in the fellowship hall on Back to School Night or you can come to the upstairs office and purchase them there. Price is $6.00 per shirt. The black mesh short may be purchased from Dennis Uniform for $12.50 or Wal-Mart for about $4.00.

Rome Trip Fundraisers

On Saturday Aug. 22 there will be a spaghetti dinner at St. Thomas Aquinas Church after the 5:00 pm mass to benefit the students who will be traveling to Rome. Bob Quinn is looking for high school students to help set up/serve/clean up for the dinner. Please contact Mr. Quinn at 259-4800 to volunteer.

Tickets are $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children (4-10), or $40.00 per family.

On Saturday & Sunday Aug. 29 & 30 Bob Quinn will also be hosting a food booth for a weekend soccer tournament located at Redwood Middle School (the Raiders practice field).  He is also thinking of other great ways to raise money for the trip. If you would like to help with this or other Rome trip fundraiser, please contact Bob Quinn -259-4800 or Judy Friedlander - 254-7546.

First Holy Communion Classes

Second grade students who are members of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and go to school at Kolbe-Trinity will need to register for St. Thomas' CCD First Communion class. Registration is after Masses on 8/29-30 and 9/12-13. The registration fee of $50 will be waived.  Please call church office with any questions. 707-255-2949.
